Hyatt Regency Waikiki: Strike is Coming to an End, But it Was Not Necessary

HONOLULU, HAWAII – Jerry Westenhaver, general manager of the Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort and Spa, today issued the following statement regarding a strike by members of UNITE HERE! Local 5.

“We are glad the strike is coming to an end, and we look forward to welcoming all of our employees back to work so they can resume providing for their families.

“Throughout the one-week strike by UNITE HERE! Local 5, Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort and Spa continued to operate normally. We implemented contingency plans that included staffing our hotel with non-union employees and management personnel to assist guests during their stay.

“This work stoppage – and the unfortunate loss of pay it caused our employees – could have been avoided. In March 2011, UNITE HERE! Local 5 reached agreements with other Hawaii hotels, including those operated by Hilton and Starwood, with a wage and benefits package identical to the offer from Hyatt. However, the union leadership rejected the Hyatt offer and would not allow its members to vote on it.

“This past week’s union strike at other Hyatt hotels on the mainland demonstrated that the work stoppage here was not about finalizing a contract for our Hawaii associates. It was about gaining leverage for an organizing effort at non-union Hyatt hotels on the mainland.

“We call on Local 5 leadership to follow the example of their colleagues in Toronto, who put the interests of their members first and came to an agreement with Hyatt last week. We hope the Local 5 leadership will stop holding our associates’ new contract hostage and will allow them to enjoy the pay and benefits increases they have earned and deserve.”
