Mars Comedy presents Open Mic Comedy Night every Monday night continuously starting January 7th, 2013 in Edge Bar at 1661 Kapiolani Boulevard; Honolulu, HI 96814. Performer’s sign-up starts at 7:30 PM and the show time is 8:00 PM. Cover charge is five dollars but free for performers. There will be drink specials, great food, and prizes.

The “Open Mic” plays an important role for stand-up comedians. It is where jokes are molded, where stage personas are discovered, and where acts are polished. Even superstar comedians like Chris Rock, Louis CK, and Joan Rivers still test their jokes at an open mic.

Stand-up comedians need open mics more than a musician would because comedians need to perform in front of a live audience to see if they are funny or not. A guitarist can practice at home until they are as good as Eric Clapton and then start performing live. A stand-up comedian can’t do jokes in front of a mirror or family. They need a live audience to give them the immediate response of laughter or silence. It is how a comedian knows if they’re joke and/or performance is any good.

From there the comedian can grow and develop into a feature comedian and then a headliner. The “Open Mic” is to a stand-up comedian what a basketball gym is to a professional basketball player in the NBA.

Mars Comedy and MarsComedy.com started in January 2012 and always had the goal of developing and promoting the Stand-Up Comedy scene in Hawaii through social media, podcasting, and live comedy shows. We will help anyone that is seriously interested in giving stand-up comedy a try.
