There were two separate multi-million-dollar settlements in Los Angeles, California Tuesday, involving different cases of multiple child abuse.

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese agreed to pay $10 million to four men who say they were abused by a former priest when they were boys.

The victims sued the Church and its former head, Cardinal Roger Mahony, who is in Rome as part of the conclave electing a new pope.

The victims accuse Mahony of covering up the case by sending the priest out of state for treatment. The priest later returned to the Los Angeles ministry and molested others.  A lawyer for the victims says Church records on the case are as close to an admission of guilt as can be expected.

Also Tuesday, the Los Angeles school system reached a multi-million-dollar settlement with 58 victims of a third-grade teacher accused of abusing children in an elementary school.

The teacher has pleaded not guilty.  He allegedly abused nearly 200 children.
