By Sky M. Laron – YOKOSUKA, Japan – When Sharon-Valerie Malano, a Waianae, Hawaii native, graduated from Nanakuli High School in 2013, she had no idea that one day she would wind up living and working in Japan.
Malano, a Logistics Specialist Seaman (LSSN) in the U.S. Navy, currently serves as a postal clerk for Naval Supply Systems Command Fleet Logistics Center Yokosuka (NAVSUP FLC Yokosuka), which is headquartered off Truman Bay, just 26 miles (41 kilometers) due south of Tokyo, Japan.
Malano is from a small town and one of the reasons she joined the Navy was to travel, her adventure now has her living in one of the largest metropolitan areas on the planet.
“I wanted to find myself as a person,” she added. “Now here I am in Japan, working as a postal clerk.”
From the very first letter a Sailor is sent at boot camp to the care packages received while deployed, the mail is a constant in the lives of the forward deployed fleet forces and their families and it is the daily actions by Sailors like Malano, which makes it all possible.
NAVSUP FLC Yokosuka provides official mail processing services and personal mail, while serving as the equivalent to the United States Postal Service (USPS) overseas, by delivering the best possible postal services in support of 7th and 5th Fleet, 18 Forward Deployed Naval Force (FDNF) ships, 30,000 military and civilian personnel and all mobile units operating in the Asia Pacific area of responsibility.
“People don’t understand how important the mail is,” said Malano. “It could come down to a little letter for a Sailor or a big part for a ship…I know that in the end the customer is going to be satisfied because they are getting their mail on time and that makes me happy.”
NAVSUP FLC Yokosuka is the Western Pacific region’s largest U.S. Navy logistics command; thanks to Malano and the entire postal team that stand ready to deliver on a daily basis.
