Shortly after Fasi’s death last year, Honolulu Marathon officials discovered through correspondence in the race office archives that Fasi was the true founder of the race.
Dr. Jim Barahal, Marathon president, made the decision to officially induct Fasi into the race’s hall of fame. The ceremony was held on Dec. 9, 2010 at the Hawaii Convention Center.
Documents proved that it was due to Fasi’s inspiration, efforts and influence that the first Honolulu Marathon was held on Dec. 16, 1973 with 167 starters. The City and County of Honolulu was the race sponsor.
Today, the race is self-supported and is one of the world’s 10 largest marathons. It generates more than $100 million for Hawaii’s economy every year.
