Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard (HI-02) spent the day on the Garden Isle, where she first received updates and a thorough briefing on the Pacific Missile Range Facility’s three-year plan and a briefing on AEGIS Ashore missile defense facility. She met with Commander Garron Morris, USN Executive Officer, and Rear Admiral Richard Williams, Commander of the Navy Region Hawai’i Naval Surface Group Middle Pacific, at the Barking Sands U.S. Naval facility.
This afternoon, the Congresswoman met with a wide spectrum of educators and students, starting with a visit to Hale Kula Niʻihau ʻO Kekaha, which is a public-charter and immersion school. She received an update on the school’s unique needs and priorities, and also discussed the direct impact of her legislation to reauthorize the Native Hawaiian Education Act.
Later, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard was interviewed by Kauaʻi High School Film Club members for their video project that seeks to create a better understanding of the challenges faced by veterans who are returning home to civilian life, and also the great opportunities they provide. She spoke about bringing community awareness to issues that many veterans are dealing with, such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, drug and alcohol abuse, and suicide.
The Congresswoman also received a tour of Kauaʻi Community College, where she met with Chancellor Helen Cox, department heads, and program representatives. She learned more about the school’s satellite partnerships with the Pacific Missile Range Facility and toured the Electronics Building, the new culinary kitchen, the Automotive Technology department, and spent time at the Career Library where Kauaʻi residents are offered job placement and career counseling opportunities.
