HONOLULU, HAWAII – In light of two recent accidents involving young men on mopeds, one being the death of 17 year old Gerald Baltazar in Manoa the other a critical accident in Kalihi, Representative Corinne Ching has introduced various pieces of legislation.
She wants to help prevent these accidents from occurring as well as to preserve the quality of life of all citizens. Representative Ching is convening a task force to explore the feasibility of treating mopeds like motorcycles in certain instances.
According to the Department of Transportation, there are approximately 22,000 mopeds on
the road, and, according to the Department of Health, more than 60% of severe head injuries come from moped
