HONOLULU — Just two weeks after opening their doors for business in 2009, RevoluSun held their first beach cleanup with the Oahu Surfrider Foundation, resulting in 900 pounds of trash removed from the Sandy Beach shoreline. This is a tradition that continues today. For the fifth year in a row, RevoluSun has partnered with the Surfrider Foundation’s Oahu Chapter for the Sandy Beach cleanup, which will be held July 19, from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. Volunteers will be rewarded with a commemorative T-Shirt and free lunch hosted by RevoluSun.

Last year, RevoluSun donated a mobile sand-sifter to the annual Sandy Beach cleanup effort. Developed by local contractor Jason Tucker Hills, the sand-sifter is designed to clean sand by pulling out micro-plastics that are inundating Hawaii beaches. Micro-plastics are small, plastic particles about 5 mm or less in size, either from industrial pellets that serve as precursors for manufactured plastic products or fragments of plastic derived from the breakdown of larger plastic products. Micro-plastics have become a paramount issue in the marine environment. The sand-sifter helped to remove more than 400 pounds of small debris at the 2013 Sandy’s Beach cleanup. Volunteers were able to remove over 2,000 cigarette butts, almost 600 bottle caps and more than 300 drink cans/bottles and single-use food containers in just 90 minutes last year.
