BY SENATE MINORITY – Senator Sam Slom has introduced a bill to designate the Hawaiian Hoary Bat (Ope’ape’a) as the Official State land mammal. SB775 is scheduled for a hearing this Thursday, February 21 in Technology and the Arts (TEC) committee. Our office is contacting people who might be interested in submitting testimony, and in contacting anyone else who might also be interested in testifying in favor of this bill.

Whew! Now that this critical piece of legislation is taken care of, we can now focus on the little things…like the budget deficit and reducing taxes. LOL just kidding. I mean finding new things to tax.
Designating the Monk Seal as the State Mammal and the Hoary Bat as the State Land Mammal are important steps in protecting these species. To my knowledge a state mammal has never gone extinct and the designations helps these species because Hawaii State officials would not want Hawaii to go down as having the first state mammal to go extinct…but I do understand concerns people would have about allocating tax money to this in a tight economy.
