Superintendent of Schools Pat Hamamoto denied last week in ”’West Hawaii Today”’ that the Department of Education is holding on to $570 million in appropriated repair and maintenance funds, as claimed by Senate Minority Leader Fred Hemmings and House Minority Leader Lynn Finnegan. Hamamoto explained that all of the current appropriations may not have been spent, but they have already been earmarked for specific projects.

Hamamoto then claimed that there is insufficient funding for backlogged R&M projects, while confusing the subject by stating,
