Gen. Vincent Brooks takes command of the 80,000 Soldiers of U.S. Army Pacific in a ceremony at Fort Shafter, Hawaii, July 2, 2013.

Brooks becomes the 60th commanding general of U.S. Army Pacific, and the first four star rank at Fort Shafter since 1974.

Brooks succeeds Lt. Gen. Francis Wiercinski who served as U.S. Army Pacific commanding general for more than two years.

Wiercinski has requested to retire from active duty after 34 years of service, with the last 8 years stationed in the Pacific.

The decision to elevate the commanding general, U.S. Army Pacific to a 4-Star general position represents the Army’s commitment to the National Defense Strategy and to US allies and partners in the Pacific.
