President George W. Bush has drawn a line in the sand and warned that the United States might cut off aid to the Palestinians if Hamas does not dissolve its armed wing and renounce threats against Israel. Part of Hamas’ so-called charter is the total destruction of Israel and so far they have not backed off from that goal.
“If they don’t, we won’t deal with them. Aid packages won’t go forward,” Bush said during an exclusive interview with the CBS News’ Bob Schieffer.
“That’s their decision to make, but we won’t be providing help to a government that wants to destroy our ally and friend. I don’t see how you can be a partner in peace if you don’t renounce violent aims,” Bush said.
“They’ve got to get rid of that arm of their party which is armed and violent, and secondly, they’ve got to get rid of that part of their platform that says they want to destroy Israel,” Bush warned.
As a result of last Thursday’s parliamentary elections Hamas won a surprising 76 seats out of 132 parliament seats, thereby defeating the ruling Fatah Party which was once led by the man known as the father of Palestinian terrorism, Yasser Arafat. The current Fatah is led by Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas. Abbas has authorized Hamas to form the next government. The United States has long pressured Abbas to help in disarming and dismantling Hamas, but neither occurred.
Each year, the Palestinian Authority is given almost a billion dollars in aid. The United States alone last year gave them $324 million of US taxpayer money to people who siphoned off millions of dollars and left scraps for the Palestinian people living in poverty. Yasser Arafat alone stole millions of dollars and stashed the money in Swiss bank accounts. And the world — including the US — looked the other way at best, or winked at Arafat’s larceny at worst.
The enormous thievery of the leadership provided these very same Palestinian leaders with a twofold bonanza: they got to keep millions of dollars for themselves; and they kept their people in abject poverty while directing their resentment and hatred towards the Jewish nation and the United States. For instance, while the late Yasser Arafat’s wife lived like a queen in Paris, babies suffered from malnutrition and disease and Arafat would tell the parents of these infants that it was Israel’s
and the US’ fault.
And the U.S. government has always been aware of this scenario, yet each year the U.S. continues to fork over more than a quarter-billion dollars of taxpayer money to ingrates, bandits, and Islamofascists.
Meanwhile, the bleeding hearts are urging the President not to discontinue financial and other aid to the Palestinians, the rationale being that to do so will cause suffering to innocent people who are not terrorists and not responsible for the failings and atrocities of their leaders. If only it were so. The fact of the matter is people are — and should be — held responsible and accountable for the government they elect.
If the Palestinian people bless a terrorist group by giving them a decisive victory in free and open elections, then Palestinians are responsible for the actions of those elected leaders. The US and other nations should withhold financial aid, while Israel unilaterally shores up its borders and defenses. In essence, give the Palestinian people their own country.
Chances are a civil war will breakout between the different factions vying for power. It could develop into a bloodbath, but it would be a bloodbath of their own making. They can be advised repeatedly that when Hamas and other terrorist or “militant” groups disarm and cease their threats of violence against the Jewish people, the faucet to foreign handouts and other assistance will be turned on once again.
As a sovereign nation, should the Palestinians perpetrate future terrorist attacks against Israel, those attacks must be considered an act of war. The Israelis would then declare war and unleash their military on an enemy who has repeatedly smacked away their hand of peace. Those who advise Israel to negotiate with whatever government in power in the Palestinian nation are preaching cowardice. Only a coward would sit and negotiate with people who are killing members of his family.
There exists today unrest in the Palestinian territory which will probably escalate in the weeks, if not days, ahead. This melodrama has gone on for decades and it’s about time that the final curtain comes down.
