Victim identified in Saturday’s fatal crash; Police arrest driver

KĪPŪ – Police have identified the 26-year-old Waimea woman who died after being hit by a vehicle in Kīpū on Saturday as Jill Garnett.

Police have also confirmed that the driver of the SUV that struck Garnett was arrested for second degree Negligent Homicide. Robert Yount, age 82 of Kalāheo, was booked by police on Saturday. He has since been released from custody pending further investigation.

According to a preliminary police report, Garnett was walking along the eastbound shoulder of Kaumuali‘i Highway, heading west, when at approximately 8:55 a.m. she was struck by an eastbound SUV near the Kīpū Road junction.

Yount did not sustain any injuries and had no passengers in his vehicle at the time of the incident.

It has not yet been determined if speed, drugs, or alcohol were contributing factors in the fatal crash.

The case remains under investigation.
