Waimanalo Gulch Landfill Now in Compliance with Best Operating Practices

In his article entitled “Debate Over Oahu Landfill Continues” published in ”’Hawaii Reporter”’ on August 7, 2006, guest columnist Bud Ebel incorrectly discusses the operation of the Waimanalo Gulch Sanitary Landfill and the proposed expansion.

First of all, nearly all of the Notice of Violation issues have been addressed and Waimanalo Gulch Sanitary Landfill is now in compliance with best operating practices. The remaining two issues involving overfilling and a nonfunctional leachate sump are being addressed. Waste Management of Hawaii has also upgraded its training and has rewritten its operations manual so that these notices do not happen again. If any fines are to be paid, Waste Management of Hawaii will be responsible for payment, not the City & County of Honolulu nor the taxpayers, as indicated by Mr. Ebel.
