Maui County Council Candidate Questionnaire for 2010
Name: Su Campos
Current job: Rental Manager for Honokeana Cove …. 17 years
Residence, how long you’ve lived in the district: 40 years
Background that qualifies you for the position:
I have lived in Napilihau for 35+ years and I was the president of the Napilihau Community Association for 20 years. Napilihau is a multicultural low- income housing development. I have worked in the tourist industry for over 30 year. I was a single parent who put her daughter thru the public schools in West Maui and then off to college in California, graduated and now lives there. I am a working gal and will be for a long time. My love for West Maui is never-ending.
What else have you run for? Have you been in public office before and if so, what position?
I sat on the Board of Variances and Appeals for the County from 1996-1999. I was the president of the Mayor’s West Maui advisory committee in the mid 90’s.
What are the biggest issue in your district and your proposed solution?
The biggest issue in West Maui is the over development of Hotels and Timeshares without the proper infrastructure. I will work with County and State agencies to improve and maintain our roads (including a “real” by-pass), sewer systems, schools, parks, etc. I would work toward a moratorium on hotels, timeshares and million dollar homes and try to get housing for the working class in West Maui.
Please share your position on Bed and Breakfasts in residential neighborhoods.
I believe that B&B’s should be looked at on an individual basis. Each neighborhood is different in Maui County. Some neighbors are feasible and some are not.
What is your position on county taxes and fees? Are they high enough or should they continue to increase?
I believe that Hotels and times hares should pay more than the working class homeowner. As in
California, Prop 13 should have been implemented here in Hawaii years ago, so that local people would not
lose their houses due to increasing land taxes.
Would you sign a pledge not to raise taxes in the future by introducing legislation or supporting
legislation that raises taxes?
I have already signed a pledge for that legislation.
Please share the most interesting thing about yourself.
I came to Maui in 1970 to attend Mauna Olu College in Makawao. 1 first fell in love with West Maui when I saw Fleming’s beach (now called Kapalua). There is where I spend my days off to rejuvenate my spirit and appreciate aliI have in my life and that I live in the most beautiful place on earth. After a day at my beach, I then can continue to share my “Aloha” at work, at home and in my art.
If you could ask any of your competitors one question, what would you ask and to who?
I would ask Elle Cochran … why do you find it necessary to spend so much for your campaign?
